In March 2016, we unveiled the newest member of our delivery team, DRU, the autonomous delivery vehicle. We are equally excited to welcome DRU Drone by Flirtey to the team.
Proving the sky truly is the limit, Domino’s partnered with Flirtey - the global leader in drone deliveries - to launch the first Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved commercial drone delivery service in the world. In November 2016, DRU Drone by Flirtey made the world's first commercial delivery of food via drone to a customer's house in Whangaparaoa in New Zealand.
DRU Drone by Flirtey is the next stage of Domino’s expansion into the Artificial Intelligence space and gives us key insights to develop and deliver new technologies for our customers.
He is just as cheeky and endearing as DRU the autonomous delivery vehicle - and we look forward to connecting more people and pizza via this landmark technology in the near future. Powered by Flirtey.
Domino’s will launch phase two of drone deliveries in New Zealand, using DRU Drone by Flirtey, in March.
When we announced the world’s first use of drones to deliver pizzas, there was skepticism given the significant technology barriers that needed to be addressed. However, we are excited to announce we are moving forward with this project.
With our first customer deliveries in New Zealand in November, with regulatory approval from the CAA, we demonstrated the technology could deliver on our expectations – our next phase will move us even closer to regular store operations.
Phase two of deliveries in New Zealand would involve a larger drone, developed by world leading drone delivery specialists Flirtey, which could carry a heavier payload (including a family meal), longer distances.
Phase two deliveries will operate from a single store, with daily deliveries in a variety of weather conditions expected, to our local Domino’s customers.
We remain convinced that DRU Drone by Flirtey will be an important part of our delivery fleet, alongside cars, e-bikes and scooters – and this next phase of deliveries is the logical next step towards that goal.
